Letter from the President, Flying Aces Pilots Association

The club meeting was held today, April 5th, and we had eight members attend. We discussed a few non standard items at this meeting and I want to make sure every member is aware of these items.

  1. Safety. Safety is always important so I’ll start with this. Jim is our Safety Officer and his duties are chairing any safety committees, ensuring existing safety regulations are enforced, and processing any grievances. He is not the catch all for complaints. If you feel he is not fulfilling his duties please bring your concerns up to me or any other officer. We are all responsible for safety.

  1. Fly in. WE, the Flying Aces are having a fly-in at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway site next Saturday, April 12th, starting at 9am. This is a club function and I expect to see many of you there. Your attendance to help make this a success is not mandatory but it would be really nice of you to attend and help. Please come out at 8am and volunteer some time. Also please bring an airplane and enjoy your club facilities.

  1. Membership. We have been lax on some of the membership requirements recently. Our by-laws require all flying members to have AMA. They must also obtain and keep a current “Park Pass”. All prospective members must be sponsored by a current member and must attend a meeting where they are to be introduced by the sponsor and voted into membership. Once voted in they are probationary for that calendar year and can not hold office for that period. They can be appointed or volunteer to serve in non-elected officer positions.

Recently we have not been enforcing the by-laws as we should. We will be.  Members that already have joined will not have to be voted on but are considered probationary. New prospective members applying before we change the application will be required to attend a meeting and be voted on prior to acceptance.

  1. Review of the clubs by-laws. During today’s meeting I have formed a committee to be comprised of the clubs officers to review the by-laws and to make recommendations at the next meeting. If anyone has any input please contact any officer prior to their review.

  1. Club field(s). We currently fly officially at two sites. These sites are in our club charter with the AMA. Our home site is David B. Waymer field in Huntersville. This is a Mecklenburg County park and we, as a club, have little input into its operation and management. You do not have to be a member of the Flying Aces to fly there. You do have to maintain a current “Park Pass” to fly there. Though we do not, as a club, have official voice with the county we do have club members that are on the Parks and Recreation board that are our voice to the county.

The second site is at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and through discussions between past and present club presidents and Humpy Wheeler we have been given this location to manage as a club flying field. There are two people that have a prior arrangement to fly there but all others are expected to be club members and abide by the club by-laws.

I am in discussions with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation to designate a third site, a site for operating float planes and sea planes. At the present this is not allowed at any park site. Please see club minutes for the current status.

Thank you for your time. Please come and help at the fly-in next Saturday and attend the next club meeting which will be at noon, May 3rd, at the David B. Waymer field. We will have a pylon race weather and attendance permitting.

I have attached a membership list. I have noted the members that I believe are currently probationary. If I’m wrong about probationary I apologize. Also please go to our web page and review the by-laws. Our web site is www.flyingacesrc.com
